Fire ban lifted in Daniel Boone National Forest

A campfire ban imposed because of dry conditions in the Red River Gorge and around Cave Run Lake was lifted Friday.

Tuesday's rain improved conditions, an official said. Campers were encouraged to be careful, though, and to make sure fires are "out cold" before leaving a camp site.

The ban, which covered the Cumberland Ranger District on the north end of the Daniel Boone National Forest, was put in place in early October.

It was widely ignored. One illegal campfire escaped and burned more than 1,600 acres on Auxier Ridge in the gorge. The Auxier Ridge area and several trails remain closed while Forest Service officials assess damage and safety hazards caused by the fire.

Tunnel Ridge Road remains closed just past the Grays Arch trail head.
