POWELL, Ohio — A Kentucky-born baby gorilla who survived an attack by her father shortly after birth has died at an Ohio zoo. The 1-year-old western lowland gorilla named Misha died Thursday at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Officials say she suffered a perforated bowel and likely intestinal infection.
Misha was born in February 2010 at the Louisville Zoo. Less than two months later, she was injured by her father, suffering a broken bone and losing part of a leg.
In August, after she was moved to Columbus, Misha's leg got stuck in a climbing structure. She recovered, then fell ill at the beginning of March.
Columbus Zoo president and chief executive Dale Schmidt called Misha "a fighter" who "won the hearts of everyone who heard her story."
