Harrison County man drowns in Licking River

The body of a man who drowned in the Licking River in Harrison County on Friday was recovered Saturday morning.

Martin Martinez, 29, was reportedly walking his dog when he slid down an embankment and fell into the river near his home in Berry, Harrison County Deputy Coroner Thomas Ware II said.

He said the current was swift on Friday, which probably kept Martinez from being able to get out of the water.

Doug McCarty, Harrison County Search and Rescue Coordinator, said Martinez's brother saw him in the water soon after he fell and called for help.

The accident was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Friday, and workers searched for Martinez until dark, McCarty said. The search resumed Saturday morning, and the body was recovered at 11:04 a.m., he said.
