Wrecked tanker spills fuel oil on I-75 in Laurel

Several thousand gallons of fuel oil spilled from a ruptured tanker Monday afternoon after a wreck on Interstate 75 in Laurel County, Kentucky State Police said Tuesday in a news release.

The wreck happened when William B. Smith, 51, of Gate City, Va., lost control of his cargo tanker on the snow-slickened road and hit a car driven by Lisa G. Estep, 49, of Corbin. The impact knocked Estep's car into a car driven by Shirley M. Laing, 53, of Woodbine.

Laing was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The interstate was closed for several hours as crews worked to clean up the spilled fuel oil.

The crash, which happened at 4:25 p.m., was one of several in the area Monday afternoon as snow squalls created hazardous driving conditions.
