Miner dies in overnight mine accident

A mine foreman died early Saturday while fixing a canopy in a Harlan County mine.

James A. Bailey, 32, of Loyall was pinned by the protective covering that he was installing on a mine shuttle car, according to the state Energy and Environment Cabinet.

The accident occurred about 1:30 a.m. at the Timber Tree Mine near Blair. The mine is owned by Parton Brothers Mining.

Investigators from the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing were at the mine.

It was the year's first mining fatality in Kentucky.
