2 Powell men face murder charges in separate cases

Stanton: Two Powell County men were arrested and charged with murder over the weekend.

Ralph Allyn, 66, was arrested Sunday morning after Kentucky State Police said he shot his girlfriend, Barbara Martin, 64, who died. He is charged with murder.

Martin was found about 6 a.m. with two gunshot wounds "from a large caliber handgun" at her home on Lower Cane Creek Road in Stanton, state police said in a news release.

Allyn was at the home when police arrived. He was arrested without incident and taken to the Montgomery County Detention Center, where he was held without bond.

Trooper Endre Samu, a spokesman for the state police post in Morehead, said the shooting appeared to be unrelated to a fatal stabbing in Powell County about 12 hours earlier.

In that case, Kelly McCoy, 50, was killed and his neighbor Terrance Wagner, 67, was charged with murder after a heated argument, state police and the county coroner said.

McCoy was visiting Wagner at his home on First Avenue in Clay City when the two began arguing. Wagner allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed McCoy, killing him, state police said in a news release.

Powell County Coroner Hondo Hearn said the killing came as a surprise to those who knew the men. The two neighbors previously had been friendly with each other, he said. "There wasn't any hard feelings between them, as far as I know, before this incident," he said. It was not clear Sunday what the men were arguing about.

Hearn said he pronounced McCoy dead at the scene from a single stab wound about 6:10 p.m., about 40 minutes after state police and emergency medical responders were called to the home.
