Whitley County man faces murder charge; victim died three weeks after attack

A Williamsburg man has been charged with murder after a Corbin man died from injuries suffered in an assault Dec. 15, Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell said Friday.

Samuel Plotnick, 35, of Williamsburg, faces murder charges in the beating death of Jimmie D. Peace, 55, of Corbin, Harrell said.

Peace was attacked at his home when he tried to intervene when the suspect allegedly was being abusive to a woman, Harrell said.

Peace was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Fayette County coroner's office said.

Peace died of complications from traumatic injuries, the coroner's office said in a news release Thursday.

Peace was first treated and released from the emergency room at Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin after the Dec. 15 assault, the coroner's office said.

The coroner's office said Peace was treated at the UK hospital's trauma intensive care unit until care was withdrawn Wednesday.

Peace had head and internal injuries, Harrell said.

The sheriff said the case will be presented to a Whitley County grand jury.

Plotnick remained at the Whitley County Detention Center on Friday in lieu of $500,000 cash bond, a booking officer said.
