A coal miner was killed Tuesday in an accident at an underground mine in Union County in Western Kentucky, according to the state Energy and Environment Cabinet.
Eli Eldridge, 34, of Sturgis died after he was hit by a ram car, a machine used to move coal from the machine that claws it out of the wall to a conveyor system.
The fatality happened about 11 a.m. CST at Patriot Coal Co.'s Highland No. 9 mine near Waverly. The company recently announced the potential for significant layoffs at the mine.
Eldridge's death is the second mining-related fatality in the state this year.
