Channel 18 takes steps to keep ice from disrupting Super Bowl broadcast

WLEX (Channel 18) says it is taking extra steps to make sure that ice won't knock the Super Bowl off the air on Sunday.

On its Web site (, the station says that during the 2003 ice storm, a chunk of ice fell from its 700-foot tower and took out a transformer.

"With that experience in mind, our staff has brought in a generator and wired the station so we can continue to air the game on NBC if there is a loss of power," the station said on its Web site.

"Our engineering staff got together to come up with a plan as soon as (the storm) started happening," operational manager Sean Franklin said on the station's Web site.
