Burgoo: Pedestrian Games

The clean-up, fix-up frenzy that has engulfed downtown as the WEG clocks tick down will no doubt benefit Lexingtonians long after the last ménage has been abandoned and the last slobber-chain hosed down. And we, like all downtown businesses, will be grateful for the smoother sidewalks and restored streetscapes. Meanwhile, as crews labor to meet the fast-approaching deadline, navigating the urban core in the "driving" event is a challenge. But doing so on foot is a world-class athletic test, involving jumping, vaulting, endurance and plenty of reining in of expectations. No scores are kept, no judges' decisions awaited, but downtowners all know we deserve some kind of medals or rosette ribbons for our collective performance in the World Pedestrian Games.
