School's opportunity for rebirth

Investigators have found evidence of arson in the fire that gutted the headquarters of the New Opportunity School for Women in Berea.

No one has been charged, and we've heard nothing about possible motives, although the contents of a cash box were stolen.

One thing we do know: The New Opportunity School is all about overcoming adversity and beating the odds.

If any institution should be able to rebound, it's one that has more than 20 years of experience helping low-income, middle-aged women from Appalachia pursue education, careers and a sense of self worth.

Founded by Jane Stephenson, whose late husband, John, was president of Berea College, the New Opportunity School also has a location at Lees-McCrae College in Banner Elk, N.C.

We wish it a rapid rise from the ashes.
