The news of Gov. Matt Bevin’s budget is slowly sinking in, outraging many and annoying others. I address his intention to stop funding the University Press of Kentucky.
As a Press board member for many years before my retirement from the University of Kentucky in 2013, colleagues and I selected manuscripts and projects that highlighted our people, economy and natural beauty like no one else does.
Ending this is just one more unnecessary thing the governor is doing to diminish Kentucky. The exceptional quality of the Press has been recognized worldwide — it is publicity you can’t buy. Exceptional books and reference encyclopedias have helped to make us known in the rest of the country and the world. Governor or legislators: Restore that money.
