Republicans Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul and Andy Barr thought it was great fun shutting down the government in 2013 when Barack Obama was president.
They claimed it was because they were concerned about deficits, ignoring that the deficits were caused by carryover from the Republican Bush tax cuts and the Republican refusal to regulate the derivatives market that led to the 2008 financial crisis.
Really they were only doing everything they could to try to blame Obama for problems caused by the flawed Republican core value of trickle-down economics.
The Republicans were brazen enough to exempt themselves from the shutdown so the 24,000 employees of Congress would continue to get their paychecks. Then they exempted the air-traffic controllers because Congress had been inconvenienced earlier in 2013 by delays catching flights home when controllers were furloughed due to the Republican sequestration of government spending.
Here we go again, always trying to blame Democrats, even though the Republicans control Congress and the out-of-control executive branch. Republicans only care about deficits when a Democrat is president and government shutdowns when a Republican is president. They need to care all the time.
