In a Feb. 8 letter, the writer praises President Donald Trump for, among a great many other things, creating “$8 trillion in equity.”
The stated accomplishments in such letters are often sufficiently vague as to be difficult or impossible to verify, but this one can be.
The Wilshire 5000 Full Cap Price Index tracks the total market value of all stocks actively traded in the United States. Between Jan. 19, 2017 and Feb. 7, 2018, it rose from 23,744 to 27,926, indicating an increase in equity of a little over $4 trillion.
The most recent $8 trillion figure I can find corresponds to the rise in the market from Jan. 20, 2013 until Jan. 19, 2017.
