The London Ferrill Community Garden has officially changed the spelling of its name, with a new sign that went up on Friday. Until recently, it was spelled "Ferrell."
Bob Voll, chairman of the Old Episcopal Burying Ground, which is where the First African Baptist Church minister was buried and which hosts the garden in his honor, said that early research in into Ferrill, a former slave, indicated that he was given the family name, Ferrell, of his owner and possibly his father. But his headstone uses London Ferrill.
"We think that, since that spelling was deliberated on by those who knew him best, that that spelling should be used. When we were creating the permanent garden sign, it was felt that this was a good time to make the shift for consistency," Voll said.
