Lexington officer injured in collision on New Circle Road

A Lexington police officer was injured when his cruiser was rear-ended Sunday night.

Officer Daniel Florence was sitting in his cruiser doing paperwork when his vehicle was struck by a van. Florence had a cut on his head and complained of neck and back pain, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said. The officer was treated and released at a local hospital.

The wreck occurred while Florence's cruiser blocked a lane of New Circle Road near Tates Creek Road at the scene of a non-injury crash. The van did not appear to slow down before it hit the cruiser and might have been going 55 mph, she said. Roberts said she did not know whether the officer's emergency lights were activated.

The police department's collision-reconstruction unit is investigating, Roberts said.
