Several area school districts and universities took swift action and closed school early or canceled class Friday in anticipation of coming storms.
Fayette County Public Schools notified parents early Friday that it was dismissing its students early and canceling all afternoon and evening events. Elementary schools that normally dismissed at 2:35 p.m. were the first to be released in Fayette County. Middle schools and elementary schools followed.
Several districts throughout Central Kentucky took similar approaches, releasing students incrementally throughout the day.
As reports of the storm began rolling in, local universities also began canceling classes and events.

The University of Kentucky issued a news release Friday afternoon announcing that it was canceling all activities at 3 p.m. or later. Classes also were canceled at Kentucky State University and Morehead State University.
UK's DanceBlue dance marathon was postponed until 8 a.m. Saturday. Dancer registration will begin at 7 a.m. at Memorial Coliseum, and the marathon will begin at 8 a.m.
