Catholic defeats Assumption

All but one semifinal berth was set in the Republic Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic on Monday, and the event was starting to look like a new satellite of the Louisville Invitational Tournament.

No. 16 Louisville Christian advanced, then No. 14 Mercy, followed by No. 4 Manual. The final spot came down to a game between Lexington Catholic and Assumption.

No. 10 Catholic used its deep bench and a final surge at the end to make its way into Tuesday morning's semifinals with a 62-54 win over the Rockets.

"It's our tournament, we didn't want to let all Louisville teams take over our tournament," Knights senior Maggie Wilson said.

Wilson hit a clutch three-pointer and made two free throws to keep Assumption behind in the final four minutes of the game.

But while the Knights' starters were a force — three finished with double figures — it was the bench that pulled out the win. Catholic's subs outscored Assumption's 25-2.

"Everyone's starting to get it right now and starting to play their role," Coach Tony Talbott said. "Everybody is starting to realize it's going to take all 12 of us to win a ball game. If we keep that attitude, we might be pretty good this year."

Off the bench, Octavia Wilson had nine points, Meghan Cawood had eight points and Oney Harrison had six.

It was the younger Wilson and Harrison who nailed back-to-back three-pointers late in the third quarter to halt an Assumption run that gave it a brief 39-37 lead.

"A couple of the young kids don't realize the pressure's on, they just go play," Talbott said. "It's just a ball game to them."

Danielle Corbett led the Knights (4-3) with 13 points. Anna Gayle Scott added 11 points. Shaneque McGhee didn't make a shot but brought down a game-high 13 rebounds, including 11 on the defensive end.

Molly Ernst had 24 points for the Rockets (3-5). Amy Brutscher chipped in 14 points and six rebounds.

Other quarterfinals

No. 16 Louisville Christian 40, No. 8 Montgomery County 35: The Centurions had to overcome a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter to pull off the upset.

Clair Buchanan hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:07 to play to put Louisville Christian up for good. They were her only points of the game.

Louisville commitment Antonita Slaughter had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead the Centurions, who are 8-0 to start the season.

Mary Jehlik led the Indians (6-1), who shot just 23.8 percent in the second half, with 10 points and five rebounds.

No. 4 Manual 77, No. 24 Highlands 59: The Crimsons (7-0) remained unbeaten, shot 55.6 percent from the field and rolled into the morning semifinals.

Guard Denisha Harbison made eight of her nine shot attempts and all six of her free throws to score 23 points. She dished out five assists. Avery Jones added 16 points and Mecheal Guess 13 points.

The Bluebirds (7-1) suffered their first loss of the season, but they got a game-high 24 points and four steals from Mallory Adler.

No. 14 Mercy 57, No. 6 Butler 46: The Jaguars led by as many as 21 points, 51-30, over the defending state champions thanks to a big stat line from Malisa Cruz.

The swing player had 24 points (including six three-pointers), nine rebounds and four steals. Lauren Faris added 10 points.
