Transylvania University basketball player Joey Verax was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player on Tuesday. Transy's Brian Lane was named league Coach of the Year.
Verax, a senior forward from Pendleton County High School, led the Pioneers to the conference regular-season and tournament titles, topping the team in scoring (16.2 points per game) and rebounding (5.5).
The league also recognized Verax's Transy teammates Aaron Cash (all conference) and Brock Jones and Tim Tierney (honorable mention).
Lane, who has a 136-77 record at Transy, won the league's top coaching award for the third time.

Transylvania (21-5) opens play in the NCAA Division III Tournament against Guilford College of North Carolina on Friday at 8 p.m. at Centre College in Danville.
