RICHMOND — Lexington Christian's defense and star power ran past Russell 69-42 in the first round of the Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic girls' basketball tournament Wednesday.
The Eagles, back to try and defend their record three straight small-school state titles, were back and forth with the Red Devils in the first quarter before using a 20-3 run in the second to put the game out of reach. Russell was held to just one field goal in that quarter.
University of Kentucky signee Sarah Beth Barnette had eight points in that spree and ended up with 18 points, 15 rebounds and four steals for LCA, which won its 11th straight.
The Eagles forced 33 Russell turnovers and turned them into 30 points.
Lexington Christian had 19 steals in the win, led by Kelli Rinehart's game-high five.
Rachel Cox added 15 points and five assists. Katelin Bundy and Rinehart added 10 points apiece for the Eagles (16-3).
Russell (9-9) was led by Kayla Parsley's 15 points and seven rebounds.
In the quarterfinals on Friday, the Eagles will meet the winner of the Bracken County-Owensboro Catholic game.
■ In other first-round games at McBrayer Arena on Wednesday, Harlan won 62-47 over Whitefield Academy, and Louisville Holy Cross topped Betsy Layne 67-53.
