Rachel Bertrand had a first-half goal negated Wednesday night because she was flagged for being offside.
Her response came in the second half, when she nudged in the only goal of the match and lifted Lexington Christian to a 1-0 sectional championship victory over host Tates Creek.
The Lady Eagles (19-4-1) advance to the state semifinals at Georgetown, where they will meet Daviess County, Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Bertrand's goal came with 30:38 left in the match.
Alison Braun sent a free kick, from near the top left corner of the penalty box, to the far post. Bertrand, about a step off the goal line, got just enough of the ball to head it past a pileup that included goalkeeper Arly Lankster.
"Then I fell, and someone fell on me," Bertrand said. "I knew it was in. I saw it. And then — oh, my gosh, it was just really exciting."
Braun, part of a back line that held Creek (17-6-4) to six shots on net, was going to the far post all the way.
"That's where I was trying to get it," Braun said. "I was just trying to get it either on frame or for somebody to put something on it like Rachel did."
LCA then rebuffed Creek time and again, the intensity picking up as time dwindled.
The Commodores' last gasp came when Alyssa Kruse put a header on goal with 25 seconds left. Goalie Myranda Powers gathered in the ball.
The LCA goal that wasn't came 151/2 minutes in.
Bertrand was on the doorstep to knock in the rebound of Rachel Cox's shot, only to get flagged.
"I don't remember being offsides but ..." she said, not finishing the sentence. "It makes me go harder, though, because it's just the drive to get a goal. Because that should have been my goal."
The Eagles have won four in a row and eight of nine. The shutout was their 13th of the season.
"We are a team in the true sense of the word," Coach Steve Fugmann said. "These guys love each other. ... It's amazing. They would do anything for each other."
Fugmann felt for his counterpart, Bo Lankster, and the Lady Commodores.
"I think the world of him as a coach," Fugmann said. "I told him I almost feel guilty winning because we've got great respect for their team and especially Coach Lankster."
"I'm proud of our girls," Lankster said. "We wanted to do something special this year and make it further than we did last year, and that's what we did. We won regionals and made it deep. Hopefully, we can kind of build on this as a program."
