College football: Lindsey Wilson holds on for win in playoff debut

Josh Haney rushed for 108 yards and what turned out to be the game-clinching touchdown for Lindsey Wilson in its 20-17 win over fellow Mid-South Conference member Faulkner in the opening round of the NAIA playoffs.

Haney's 45-yard scamper for a score put the Blue Raiders up 20-9 with 4:25 to play in the game.

Faulkner quarterback David Cochran connected with Jazeric Peterson on a 4-yard TD pass before the pair combined for a two-point conversion to trim the Lindsey Wilson lead to 20-17.

The Blue Raiders, appearing in the playoffs for the first time since the program began in 2010, converted two first downs at the end to secure their first postseason win and avenged a 28-21 loss to the Eagles (9-3) earlier this season.

Branden Cresap (Collins) went 16-for-36 with two interceptions for the Blue Raiders but threw two TDs, including an 80-yard bomb to Chaz Barnes to give Lindsey Wilson (10-2) its first lead of the game at 7-3 in the first quarter.

Marian 34, Georgetown 3: Tevin Lake rushed for two scores, Hayden Northern threw two TDs and the hosts had no difficulty ending the Tigers' season in first round of the NAIA playoffs.

Marian (9-2) only outgained Georgetown by 52 yards (255-203), but forced six Tigers turnovers.

Georgetown (8-3) lost three fumbles and was held to negative 16 yards rushing, much of that below-zero total attributable to seven sacks against quarterback Neal Pawsat (Mason County).

Pawsat went 21-for-43 for 219 yards but threw three interceptions.

Charlotte 52, Morehead State 14: Kalif Phillips scored three touchdowns in a game for the fourth time this season, rushed for 189 yards and propeled host Charlotte to finish with a win in its second season.

Charlotte (5-6) will join the FBS Conference USA next fall. The 49ers shot out to a 24-0 first-quarter lead against Morehead State (4-8) with Phillips scoring twice in the period on runs of 59 and 37 yards. The sophomore notched his fifth straight game with 150 yards rushing or better and finished with a school-record 20 touchdowns in a season.

Morehead State's Austin Gahafer (St. Xavier) was harried into three interceptions against two TDs. He threw TD passes to Brandon Bornhauser and Jake Raymond after the score was 45-0.

Damarrell Alexander rushed for 107 yards and two TDs as Charlotte racked up 300 yards on the ground.

St. Xavier 38, Campbellsville 35: The Tigers surrendered 21 straight points after taking a double-digit lead and couldn't recover in their first NAIA postseason appearance in 13 years.

Campbellsville took a 28-17 lead on Trevon Chatman's second of three TD receptions before the Cougars (9-2) went on their big run.

John Carroll 63, Centre 28: The Blue Streaks (10-1) set a school record for points scored in an NCAA playoff game and scored 49 of the game's first 56 points in the first half to snuff the Colonel's unbeaten season (10-1).
