White beats Red 89-86 in Louisville's 2nd basketball scrimmage

Montrezl Harrell scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the White team to an 89-86 win over the Red team on Sunday afternoon in the KFC Yum Center. Chris Jones led the Red team with 28 points, six assists and seven rebounds.

It was the second of two scrimmages for the Cardinals. The White team won last week's, 75-72 off a 3-pointer by Jones. Coach Rick Pitino changed up the teams in the final intrasquad game, moving Jones from the White team to the Red team.

The game was tightly-contested early on until the Red team made a 7-0 run to take a 24-17 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. The White team responded with a run of its own to cut the lead to 26-25 with 6:07 remaining in the half. Terry Rozier made a layup on the next play and the White team never looked back, taking a 41-34 lead into the locker room.

The White team finished the first half shooting 57.7 percent while the Red team shot 33.3 percent. The Red team finished with 22 rebounds and just six turnovers while the White team finished with 18 rebounds and 11 turnovers.

The White team took their momentum into the second half, building a 23-point lead with 13:34 left to play. The Red team gradually chipped away at the lead behind the play of Jones. After two free throws from Anton Gill, the lead was cut to 71-60 with 7:46 remaining.

The White team responded with a 5-0 run, pushing the lead back to 16 points with just over six minutes remaining. The Red team turned up the defensive pressure in the final minutes and cut the lead to 86-81 after Gill nailed a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left. The White team broke the press on the next play, finding Jaylen Johnson for a layup with 16 seconds remaining.

The Red team continued the pressure and got within three after Jones nailed a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining but could not get any closer.

The White team finished the game shooting 54.5 percent while the Red team shot 35.8 percent. The Red team finished with 46-38 advantage in rebounds.

Louisville returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 1, as it plays host to Barry in the first of two exhibitions at 12:30 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center.
