CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — ESPN updated its class of 2014 rankings earlier this week, and there was a new name toward the top of the list.

Texas center Myles Turner went from unranked to the No. 10 overall prospect in the class.

Turner is also a new name on UK's recruiting board.

The 7-foot center said John Calipari called his father for the first time last weekend, and he’s been trading text messages with the UK assistants.

“They said they’ve had their eye on me,” Turner said. “They haven’t really been able to see me play very much, but they’re definitely going to watch me in July.”

He’s already well aware of UK’s program.

“I think tradition, that’s the first thing that pops in my head,” Turner said. “I know tradition is excellence, and I think it’s just a great program.”

Turner claims no favorites and plans to cut his list to 10 schools in late July. He doesn’t have any official visits set in stone, but he said Oklahoma State will probably get one. He’s also expecting to take unofficial visits to Arizona and Kansas in the fall.

Other schools on his list include Duke, Louisville, Texas, UCLA, Baylor, UNLV and Miami.

“Right now, I’m just wide open. I’m wide open to anybody,” Turner said. “I never shut a school out, no matter what the name, no matter what the tradition. I really appreciate everything that’s going on and respect every school that comes to me.”

Turner listed his strengths as blocking shots, outworking opponents and stretching defenses with his shooting ability.

His goal, like every top-10 recruit, is to play in the NBA.

“I want to be developed, of course. And go to the NBA,” he said. “That’s been my dream for a long time. Anywhere I feel can develop me the most, that’s where I’m going to go.”
