Men’s tennis: Kentucky took its first loss of the season, 6-1 to defending NCAA champion and No. 1 ranked Virginia on Sunday in Charlottesville.
But the Cats’ lone point was a big one. UK sophomore William Bushamuka defeated the reigning NCAA singles champion, Ryan Shane, in straight sets 7-6, 6-3. Shane is ranked 11th in the nation.
Bushamuka, No. 79 in the nation, is 5-0 in singles this season. That includes a defeat of No. 12 Nicholas Alvarez of Duke earlier this month.
“What a win by William,” Coach Cedric Kauffmann said. “Beating the defending NCAA champion on the road is a big deal. He is growing each week.”
