University of Kentucky pitcher Chanda Bell struck out 14 batters, and three teammates hit home runs as the Wildcats stunned fifth-ranked Arizona State 5-2 in their softball season opener in Tempe, Ariz., on Thursday night.
Bell, a sophomore from Indianapolis, pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits.
Junior left fielder Annie Rowlands hit a solo home run in the third inning and finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Sophomore third baseman Brittany Cervantes hit a two-run homer in the third inning, and senior shortstop Molly Johnson hit a solo shot in the top of the sixth.
Kentucky finished with 11 hits off Arizona State pitcher Megan Elliot.
Arizona State was ranked No. 5 in the USA Today/National Fast-pitch Coaches Association pre-season top-25 poll. Kentucky was not ranked but was among teams also receiving votes with 11.
Kentucky is back in action Friday with games against San Diego State and Cal State Fullerton in Tempe. The Wildcats, playing in the Kajikawa Classic, play two more games Saturday.
