Top-seeded James Ward of Britain takes on Mathieu Rodrigues of France as play begins Monday in the men's main draw of the Fifth Third Tennis Championships at UK's Boone Tennis Complex.
The spotlight also will be on Eric Quigley and Brad Cox, the University of Kentucky's top duo, who will play a first-round doubles match against Rodrigues and Clement Reix.
On Sunday, former Arkansas star Blake Strode, the top seed in the men's qualifying round, beat Minnesota's Phillip Arndt 6-0, 6-3, and Ohio State's Chase Buchanan bested UK's Cox 7-5, 6-3, as seven of eight seeds progressed, needing only a win Monday to get into the main draw. No. 7 seed Chris Kwon was the only one to fall, 6-3, 6-1, to wild card Roy Kalmanovic.
Megan Broderick, who played No. 1 for Kentucky all four years, moved on to Monday's second qualifying round against top-seeded Amanda Fink by beating Angela Assal of Bronx, N.Y., 6-0, 6-2.
"This was my first (pro) match of the summer, so it was good to get the feel again," Broderick said. "I set simple patterns and I just need to execute those patterns a little better the rest of qualies."
Earlier, two-time Kentucky state high school champ Samantha Maddox fell 6-3, 6-2 to Nicole Robinson, a high school junior from West Palm Beach, Fla.
'Jorts' on the courts
At 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, before the top men take the court, former UK basketball stars Josh Harrellson and Kyle Macy, and UK softball coach Rachel Lawson will take part in a Celebrity Doubles Cats Clash. The fourth player has not been announced.
