The Kentucky volleyball team swept into the Sweet 16 Friday night and is coming home for the next round.
The 16th-ranked Cats dominated Texas A&M 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 and got to the NCAA's third round for the second time in three seasons under Coach Craig Skinner. Sophomore Whitney Billings had a season-high 17 kills, and the 2011 senior class got its 100th victory.
"We're just really excited, not just because we won the match, but because of how we performed tonight," Skinner said. "It was a heck of a team effort."
The Cats return to Memorial Coliseum on Dec. 9 to face the winner of Saturday's match between No. 1 seed Texas and Michigan State. UK (28-5) has won 17 straight at home.
U of L sweeps Ball State
Lola Arlsanbekova had a match-high 19 kills and eight digs to lead Louisville past Ball State 25-22, 25-15, 25-20 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at Purdue. U of L (24-8) hit .304 and outblocked Ball State 9-3. Louisville takes on No. 5 seed and Purdue on Saturday at 7 p.m.
■ Morehead State came close in the third set but never gave Purdue much trouble, falling 25-16, 25-15, 25-23 in the first round Friday.
■ Western lost a heartbreaker to Marquette in Champaign, Ill., Friday night, losing in four sets with none decided by more than four points. The Toppers lost 25-21, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23.
