Morehead State University's all-girl cheerleading squad won its second consecutive national title in its division Saturday at the Universal Cheerleaders Association College Nationals in Orlando, Fla.
Meanwhile, the University of Kentucky's co-ed cheerleading team — the defending national champions in the Division IA co-ed division — placed third. The University of Alabama took home top honors in both the co-ed and all-girl competitions in Division IA. University of Central Florida came in second in co-ed. Western Kentucky University placed fifth in the same division, according to unofficial results.
UK's cheerleading team has won 20 national cheerleading championships in co-ed Division IA.
UK Coach Jomo Thompson said before the results were announced Sunday night that he did not expect UK to win because of a problem they had with their routine during Sunday evening's finals. "Today was not our best day," Thompson said.
UK's dance team came in third in the Division IA hip-hop competition of the Universal Dance Association championships. That's up three places from where the team finished last year, according to UK Athletics.
Morehead State University edged out West Georgia in the all-girls title in Division I to win its 10th championship and 36th overall title for Morehead since 1988.
"I am ecstatic for our all-girl group for winning another national championship," Coach Mark Coleman said in a release.
