Meagan Prince struck out a career-high 11 batters and Nikki Sagermann hit Kentucky's first home run of the season in the Wildcats' 4-2 season-opening win over Florida A&M on Thursday.
Prince threw the second complete game of her career, allowing just two runs — one earned — in her ninth start at UK.
Sagermann's home run gave the Cats a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning. It was the junior's 21st homer, giving her sole possession of eighth place on Kentucky's career list.
Sylver Samuel got UK's offense moving early, reaching third base on a misplayed ball hit to left-centerfield in the first inning. Griffin Joiner connected on a sacrifice fly to drive home Samuel and give the Cats a 1-0 lead.
The Rattlers tied the game in the second on an Amber Fullwood single.
Kentucky regained the lead in the third inning after an infield single to shortstop by Samuel advanced Ansley Smith from third.
Jessica Nathan's RBI double got Florida A&M to within two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Rattlers failed to close the gap.
Christian Stokes, Sagermann, Samuel and Joiner finished 1-for-3 for the Wildcats.
Smith was 1-for-2 and scored two runs for the Kentucky. Breanne Ray went 1-for-1.
