Former University of Kentucky player Daniel Orton will be assigned to the NBA Developmental League, Orlando Magic president of basketball operations Otis Smith told the Orlando Sentinel on Tuesday night.
Orton, 20, will report to the New Mexico Thunderbirds in Rio Rancho, N.M. Smith said Orton could remain there a couple of weeks, but he wasn't sure how long it would be.
Smith told the Sentinel that he made the move so that Orton can receive some playing time.
Orton was one of a record five University of Kentucky players selected in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft.

The 6-foot-10 Orton played one season as a reserve at UK last season before Orlando picked him 29th overall.
Orton has yet to play for Orlando and has only practiced with the team for a couple of weeks. He has struggled with conditioning and a knee injury.
Orton joins fellow first-round pick and former Cat Patrick Patterson in the D-League. Patterson, drafted by the Houston Rockets, is playing for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
