UK Men's Basketball

Fast break: A quick summary of Kentucky basketball's 87-63 win over Loyola (Md.)

Talking points

Loyola was better than some of the recent cupcakes in Rupp. UK jumped up 9-2 but Loyola cut it to 11-10. With Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Doron Lamb getting two early fouls and Terrence Jones injured, UK had to use some odd lineups and could not shake a scrappy Loyola team in the first half. UK's lead was 45-39 at the half. Foul trouble hit Loyola and UK went on a 22-4 run early in the second half behind Anthony Davis and Kyle Wiltjer.

Telling numbers

In the first half, Loyola scored 12 points on three-pointers. UK had zero. In the same half, UK made 17 free throws to five for Loyola.

■ Wiltjer was 3-for-6 on three-pointers; the rest of the team 0-for-6.

■ UK made 28 free throws (37 attempts). Loyola missed half of its 16 foul shots.

Thumbs up

They did not stuff the stat sheet but Twany Beckham and Eloy Vargas both gave UK some reliable minutes when its depth was tested.

■ He struggled early but Wiltjer settled down to score 24 points.

■ Another nice effort by Anthony Davis — 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Thumbs down

At times, especially on the boards and on the defensive end, UK looked like its mind was on going home for Christmas.
