UK Men's Basketball

Fast Break: Kentucky too talented for Toppers

Talking points

UK made its first four shots for a 10-0 start but WKU responded with a nice 12-0 run. Terrence Jones helped UK reclaim the lead. WKU spread out its offense early to try to neutralize the shot-blocking of Anthony Davis. T.J. Price had 13 early points, and a fearless WKU team was within 18-17 before UK went on a 14-2 run. Western did not score in the final 4:33 of the first half, and UK led 45-26. WKU briefly tried to press UK, but that quickly became a Davis dunking drill. WKU could not match UK's talent. There is a reason a No. 1 seed has never lost to a No. 16.

Telling numbers

■ Jones and Doron Lamb each were 6-for-8 shooting in the first half, combining for 29 points.

■ Price had 16 for WKU in the first half. He had half of Western's field goals.

■ UK shot 61.5 percent in the first half; WKU made 31.3 percent.

■ Points in the paint: UK 46, WKU 26.

Thumbs up

■ Jones has rarely been better than he was in this one. He had 15 points, five rebounds and a massive put-back dunk in the first half.

■ A salute to Ray Harper and Western for bringing some hoops magic back to Bowling Green.

■ In the second half, Davis got back to controlling the game around the rim. By design or not, it seemed the big guy had been floating around the perimeter more than usual lately.

Thumbs down

■ Western finished with a 16-1 run, and the UK starters stayed in until the closing seconds. Was UK tired or bored? Is the swagger back?
