The University of Kentucky women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Southeastern Conference this season in media voting announced Tuesday.
Also Tuesday, Kentucky junior A'dia Mathies was named to the pre-season All-SEC first team.
Tennessee topped the poll with 264 points and received all 22 first-place votes.
Next were Georgia with 228 points and Kentucky with 212.
Tennessee went 16-0 in winning the SEC regular-season title last season, then beat Kentucky in the conference tournament championship game. Most of that team returns this season, led by 6-foot-2 swing player Shekinna Stricklen, who was voted pre-season player of the year.
Kentucky finished 25-9 overall last year, 11-5 in SEC play, and advanced to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments for the first time since the 1981-82 and 1982-83 seasons.
Coach Matthew Mitchell, entering his fifth season at UK, returns 10 letter winners — including four starters from last season — and welcomes one of the nation's top recruiting classes. The Cats also picked up UConn transfer Samarie Walker, a sophomore. The McDonald's All-American will be eligible to play for Kentucky after the fall semester.
