Yet another familiar face and a fan favorite will be back on the Kentucky sidelines next season: Amber Smith.
The former Cats point guard, who played from 2008-12 and was part of the most successful senior classes in school history, will join Matthew Mitchell’s support staff in a player development role, the Herald-Leader has learned.
The Winter Haven, Fla, native spent the last two years at Louisiana Tech as an assistant coach. She also worked with new UK assistant coach Kyra Elzy as a graduate assistant at Tennessee before that.
Smith, who underwent surgery on both knees during her career, was part of the start of the rise of UK women’s basketball under Mitchell, helping the Cats advance to three straight NCAA Tournaments and two Elite Eights. Smith played in 123 games with 109 starts, averaging seven points and 3.4 assists a game.
