UK QB Cobb to have knee surgery

The struggling University of Kentucky offense might be forced into a quarterback change as it awaits its bowl destination.

Starting quarterback Randall Cobb will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday to repair cartilage in his left knee, UK announced in a release on Monday.

Cobb, a true freshman, suffered the injury in Kentucky's 28-10 loss to Tennessee on Saturday, and his status for the bowl game won't be determined until after the surgery.

UK Coach Rich Brooks said on his weekly radio show on Monday night that the staff wasn't aware of the injury until Sunday and that Cobb told him that he thought the injury may have occurred in the second quarter.

Cobb, who has started the last four games at quarterback, struggled to move the offense against Tennessee and was replaced in the third quarter by Mike Hartline, who started the season's first eight games.

For the season, Cobb has completed 52 of his 99 pass attempts (52.5 percent) for 542 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions while adding 316 rushing yards and seven TDs. Cobb has also spent time at wide receiver and has caught 21 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Hartline has gone 153-for-280 passing for 1,462 yards with eight touchdown passes and seven interceptions.

Hartline will take snaps with the first team while Cobb is out, with sophomore Will Fidler moving into the backup role.

Cobb's injury will also force the coaching staff to look at alternate punt returners, as Cobb was averaging 8.4 yards per return.

The Wildcats are scheduled to resume practicing on Saturday, and will find out where they'll go bowling on Sunday. UK is expected to go to either the Music City Bowl or Liberty Bowl.
