University of Kentucky wide receiver Aaron Boyd will be redshirted for the 2009 season, UK Coach Rich Brooks said Friday.
Boyd, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound sophomore from Henry Clay High School, played in 11 games as a true freshman last year despite missing most of fall camp with mononucleosis, catching just five passes for 46 yards.
Boyd was suspended for a week earlier this month for a violation of team rules, and with UK having plenty of players at that position, Brooks said a redshirt for Boyd made sense.
"In hindsight it might have been wise for him to redshirt last year," Brooks said.

Brooks said that Boyd needed maturity and to start better "understanding the level of commitment that has to be made and what has to be done to play at this level. He played a lot last year, so he understands what he didn't do well and needs to do better."
Johnson strains foot
UK senior linebacker Micah Johnson suffered a strained foot in a pass rush drill in practice earlier this week. Johnson did not practice Friday and will not participate in UK's final fall scrimmage Saturday.
Brooks said X-rays were negative and there was no fracture in the foot but Johnson's status for the season opener with Miami next Saturday was uncertain.
"It's sore so we'll just have to see whether he'll be ready to go next week or not," Brooks said.
