Alabama No. 1 in coaches' poll

Defending national champion Alabama is No. 1 atop the USA Today pre-season coaches' college football poll.

The Crimson Tide is one of six Southeastern Conference teams in the Top 25, joined by No. 3 Florida, No. 16 Louisiana State, No. 19 Arkansas, No. 21 Georgia and No. 23 Auburn.

Three additional SEC teams are among the 28 schools also receiving votes: Mississippi, South Carolina and Mississippi State.

The only three league schools not represented in the poll are Kentucky, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

No. 15 Pittsburgh and No. 24 West Virginia are the only Big East teams in the Top 25. Cincinnati, Connecticut and South Florida also received votes. Louisville did not.

Alabama got 55 of 59 possible first-place votes. The other four went to Ohio State, which is No. 2 in the newspaper's ranking.

Boise State will begin the season ranked No. 5. The Broncos, like Alabama, finished last season 14-0. They beat Texas Christian in the Fiesta Bowl.
