Officials outline changes to address safety, security at UK game

Several changes were announced for University of Kentucky football game days Thursday to address safety, security and parking issues on the campus and in neighborhoods surrounding Commonwealth Stadium.

UK Police Chief Joe Monroe said he wanted word of the changes to get out before Saturday's football season opener so that fans will have a positive experience. UK will play Western Kentucky University.

The changes announced Thursday include:

■ No tow-behind trailers in UK parking lots without a permit. Fans arriving with a trailer will be directed to a grass lot on the periphery of the parking area.

■ Golfs carts, motorized scooters and motorized coolers will not be permitted anywhere around the stadium, including all parking lots, sidewalks and streets.

■ Tailgating and the parking of recreational vehicles on Cooper Drive cannot begin earlier than noon on Friday. Two vehicles will be allowed to park side-by-side within the designated tailgating area. This change is for better organization of vehicles and for pedestrian safety, Monroe said.

■ No backpacks or large bags will be permitted in Commonwealth Stadium. Diaper bags will be allowed, but searched.

■ Hospital Drive will be closed to all traffic except vehicles going to the Emergency Room.

■ Fans can text 78247 and give their seat location to report any disruptive behavior. However, they should continue to use 911 for emergencies.
