Kentucky officially announced the hiring of Florida International defensive coordinator Matt House as its new special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach on Thursday.
“I’m very excited to bring Matt into the program,” Coach Mark Stoops said in a news release. “He brings a wealth of experiences from the NFL and college football. I’ve spoken before about how I like having coaches with defensive coordinator experience in the staff room and Matt has that as well.”
House, 37, is one of three members of the defensive coaching staff with coordinator experience, including Stoops, defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot and new secondary coach Steve Clinkscale.
The addition of House, who replaced Andy Buh, means a slight change in responsibilities for the defensive staff, with Eliot moving to coaching outside linebackers. That was a position he coached previously at Florida State under Stoops.
House has three years of experience as a college coordinator, including one season at FIU as well as two seasons at Pittsburgh. Since starting his coaching career in 2001, he’s had several successful stops in college and the NFL.
“I’m excited to work with Coach Stoops, as he has a great reputation for defense,” House said in the release. “I wanted the opportunity to be at a great university that competes in the best conference in college football.”
The Harrison, Mich., native, and his wife, Jessi, have three sons Jackson, Jacob and Trent as well as a daughter, Avery.
House replaces Buh, who left in the middle of spring football to become the defensive coordinator at Maryland, where he joined the staff of long-time friend DJ Durkin.
The latest Kentucky hire is one of many for Stoops this offseason, starting in December with the firing of first-year offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson as well as wide receivers coach Tommy Mainord.
They were replaced in part by co-offensive coordinators Eddie Gran, who also coaches running backs, and Darin Hinshaw, who coaches quarterbacks, as well as former Louisville wide receiver coach Lamar Thomas.
Other departures include UK running backs coach Chad Scott, who took the tight ends job at North Carolina, and Derrick Ansley, who filled the secondary spot at Alabama.
Steve Clinkscale from Cincinnati replaced Ansley before the start of spring practice.
