University of Kentucky football signee Javon Provitt told the Herald-Leader on Thursday that he will attend Lackawanna College in Pennsylvania this fall.
Provitt — a 6-foot-3, 305-pound defensive tackle from Warren, Ohio — committed to the Wildcats in late January, about a week before national signing day.
He said he's going the junior-college route for academic reasons.
"It's basically because my test scores are low," Provitt told the Herald-Leader. "But I'll only be staying a year and a half there, and then I'll be heading back to UK."
Provitt says he plans to enroll at UK in January 2017 and participate in the program's spring practice later that year.
He was considered a three-star prospect coming out of high school, and ESPN ranked him as the No. 62 defensive tackle nationally in the class of 2015. Provitt was not expected to have an immediate impact, but he was seen as a promising player for the future of UK's defense.
UK's coaches have been supportive of him throughout this process, Provitt said.
"They've pretty much told me that Lackawanna would be a good fit for me. It's not far from where I live. Basically, I'm going to use this just to mature as a player and mature as a person. This has humbled me."
