Florida quarterback Mac Jones announced his commitment to the University of Kentucky on Monday, becoming the program's first pledge for the class of 2017.
Jones — a 6-foot-2 prospect from Jacksonville, Fla. — earned a scholarship offer from UK after attending a recruiting camp in Lexington last month. East Carolina was his only other scholarship offer, and North Carolina and North Carolina State were among the other schools recruiting him.
Rivals.com ranks Jones as a three-star prospect and the No. 17 pro-style quarterback in his class. It's a solid addition for the Wildcats, as well as an early pickup at an important position to get the ball rolling on the 2017 recruiting cycle.
New UK offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson recruited Jones as an assistant coach at West Virginia and continued to evaluate him after joining the Wildcats staff last December.
UK already has 20 commitments for the class of 2016, including Ohio quarterback Gunnar Hoak, who has a four-star ranking from ESPN.
The Wildcats did not sign a quarterback in the class of 2015.
UK has three quarterbacks on the 2015 roster: Junior Patrick Towles, freshman Drew Barker and sophomore Reese Phillips, who has been sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury.
