Eagles still in first after holding on

MOREHEAD — Morehead State played into Tennessee Tech's hands after building a seemingly safe 13-point lead with less than six minutes left Thursday night.

Tech, shooting 24 percent for the second half, suddenly found its eye. Morehead continued its faulty ballhandling (27 turnovers for the game), lost all but one point of its lead, then hung on for a 64-62 Ohio Valley Conference win.

Morehead's strategy at the end almost backfired, according to Coach Donnie Tyndall.

The Eagles, leading 64-61, fouled Frank Davis with 2.2 seconds left. Davis made the first of the bonus, missed the second on purpose, got the rebound and missed a score-tying shot from 17 feet.

The Eagles moved to 7-9 overall and 4-1 and in first place in the Ohio Valley Conference.

"We talked as a staff 30 seconds," said Tyndall about the final strategy. "My thinking was that Kenneth Faried had four fouls, and Leon Buchanan had played 39 minutes. We didn't want an extra five minutes."

Buchanan, who led all scorers with 22 points, was relieved after the close finish.

"We needed some stops, and the defense made them," he said. "We had played into their hands before that."

Morehead did most of its scoring inside, having a 44-24 advantage on points in the paint. Buchanan made nine of 14 shots, most of them on driving layups.

Demonte Harper scored 18 points, and Faried had 16 rebounds as Morehead ruled the boards 50-34.

D.J. Lindsay led Tech (8-6, 2-2) with 20 points.

The lead changed hands six times in the last five minutes of a foul-plagued first half. Back-to-back layups by Buchanan in the last 1½ minutes helped Morehead to a 30-29 lead at the break.

The Eagles never lost the lead, but Tech rallied within one, 59-58, with 2:18 left after a 14-2 run.
