NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma women's basketball coach Sherri Coale will be presented a peace award from the United Nations.
Celebrate Positive announced the honor Monday. The group says the U.N. NGO Positive Peace Award recognizes individuals, businesses, athletes, sports teams, entertainers and schools around the world for positive contributions.
Coale received the inaugural award in the sports coach category. She had been nominated by Journey Church in Norman for her program's efforts to aid earthquake victims in Haiti.
Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari was among the nominees for the award. He was nominated by the charity Samaritan's Feet for helping deliver new shoes in June to orphans in Haiti, where he washed the feet of the orphans before helping them put on the shoes.
Coale will be presented with the award Wednesday before the Sooners' game against Kansas State.
