Transy men go inside to dismantle Centre 74-62

Transylvania's 74-62 victory over Centre was an inside job.

Brandon Rash and Ethan Spurlin combined for 46 points, most from close range, as the Pioneers prevailed Tuesday night before a near-capacity crowd of 1,002 at the Beck Center.

Rash, from Montgomery County, scored 17 of his career-high 28 points in the second half. He also had four rebounds and two assists, while committing only one turnover.

Fellow 6-foot-4 junior Spurlin, from Lincoln County, added 18 points, 11 rebounds and an assist, also with one turnover.

"We had up on the board as one of the keys 'attack, attack, attack' and 'pound, pound, pound,'" Transy Coach Brian Lane said.

The Pioneers (2-0) also got 12 points and seven rebounds from 6-3 senior Chris Owens.

Transy outscored the Colonels 34-10 in the paint, 10-0 on second-chance points. Transy outrebounded Centre 33-23, including 7-2 on the offensive end.

"Centre games are my favorite games," Rash said. "The students make it awesome, the way they come out and support us."

With four straight wins, Transy leads the all-time series 107-73.

"I played against a lot of (Centre players) in high school," Spurlin said. "It's just really bragging rights. And I live closer to Danville than Lexington, so it means a lot to me."

With 6-3 Donovan Whiteside out two more weeks (broken foot), Centre wasn't able to handle Rash.

"(Rash) is a really tough matchup," Centre Coach Greg Mason said. "I think he's a first- or second-team All-American. That's the reason we had to go zone."

Greg Ross paced Centre with 20 points and eight rebounds. Josh Karsner had 17 points and five boards.

Centre had a 9-0 run en route to a 17-10 lead.

Miffed that Transy wasn't looking inside, "we re-introduced (Rash) to the rest of the team at one of the timeouts," Lane said.

Ashley Hatfield brought Transy even at 20 with a three-point play.

Tied at 24, the Pioneers closed the half with a 10-2 flurry to lead 34-26.

Barrett Meyer dished to Spurlin in the paint. Rash scored back-to-back goals down low, then grabbed his own miss and threw in a 5-footer. Spurlin added a layup just ahead of the buzzer, assisted by Owens.

Centre was still within 46-40 before Transy scored 12 straight to lead 58-40. This time, the Pioneers struck from outside, too.

Tate Cox, Hatfield and Rash hit three-pointers. Inside, Rash also converted a three-point play. Centre never came closer than 11 after that.
