Transy's Spurlin, Lane named HCAC player, coach of the year

Transylvania's Ethan Spurlin was named the 2011-12 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player, and the Pioneers' Brian Lane was named Coach of the Year in voting announced by the league on Tuesday.

Transy's Brandon Rash joined Spurlin on the All-HCAC first team. Teammate Barrett Meyer earned second-team recognition, and Tate Cox received honorable mention. Mike Stone was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

The Pioneers won their fourth HCAC regular-season men's basketball title, as well as an at-large berth into the Division III NCAA Tournament. Transylvania (23-4) will host Carroll University of Waukesha, Wis., (16-9) at the Beck Center in Lexington on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Spurlin, a junior forward from Lincoln County, averaged 16.9 points and 6.4 rebounds and shot 55.6 percent from the field.

Lane was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time after leading the Pioneers to the regular-season conference title with a 16-2 record.
