Calipari Herald-Leader

Kentucky and Louisville were among 96 men's basketball teams across all divisions honored Thursday as winners of the Team Academic Excellence Award, presented for the first time by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The awards recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the 2012-13 season.

Kentucky had a team-record 3.40 GPA in the spring semester, with 12 players coming in at 3.0 or better. In the fall, UK had a 3.06.

Louisville posted a 3.41 in the fall and a 3.18 in the spring.

Kentucky was the only team from the Southeastern Conference to earn NABC recognition.

Louisville and Kentucky were two of only six BCS-level teams to reach the standard, joining Stanford, Texas, Texas Tech and Utah.

Awards were presented to schools from NCAA divisions I, II and III, plus NAIA division I and II.
