Eastern Kentucky hired Minnesota assistant Dan McHale as its men's basketball coach.
ESPN first reported the news, and McHale confirmed the report to the Star Tribune of Minneapolis on Tuesday evening. The newspaper reported McHale will be introduced at EKU on Thursday.
"I'm excited to take on a new challenge and represent a great university in Eastern Kentucky," McHale told the Star Tribune. "I'm just ready for the next part of my journey. ... I'll miss Minnesota on a daily basis, but this was the right decision for me and my family. Coach (Richard) Pitino and his staff absolutely have his program going in the right direction."
McHale replaces Jeff Neubauer, who left the Colonels to take the head coaching job at Fordham.
He's a New Jersey native who also has roots in Kentucky. He was a student manager at UK from 1997 to 2001. He joined U of L's staff in 2001 as a staff assistant, and was later its director of video operations.
McHale joined Pitino's staff at Minnesota as his top assistant in 2013. Before that, he was at Seton Hall for three years.
