Defending champion Cullan Brown held a one-stroke lead after the first round of Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Boys’ State Golf Championship on Monday.
Brown, a Lyon County senior who’s committed to the University of Kentucky, was 5-under 67 following the first round of play at Bowling Green Country Club. He was one shot ahead of Will Harnice, a senior at Franklin County who finished in a tie for 51st last year. Brown won last year’s state tournament by three strokes.
Golfers from the 9th Region fared well in the opening round. Jackson LaLonde, a Lexington Christian junior, was tied for third with St. Xavier’s Campbell Kremer after shooting 3-under 69. LCA’s Jansen Preston, a sophomore, was tied for fifth with Owensboro Catholic’s Hayden Riney after shooting 2-under 70.
Lafayette sophomore Henry Lane was tied for seventh with a 1-under 71. Madison Central’s Zach Miller was tied for 11th at an even-par 72.
Lexington Christian will be in contention for the overall team title on Tuesday. The Eagles were 4-over 292 as a team on Monday, good for third place behind St. Xavier and Trinity, which tied for first after going 2-over 290 for the day.
