Clemente's golden goal began with interception

Ricky Clemente scored the golden goal with 30 seconds left in the first overtime to give host Paul Laurence Dunbar a 2-1 win over 43rd District rival Tates Creek on Thursday night.

Clemente turned and fired a shot on goal from just inside the 18 past the Tates Creek keeper after receiving the ball from Amir Simons Miller.

The goal — called "golden" because it was scored in overtime and ended the game — was triggered by an interception by Dunbar's Javier Delgado, who won the ball at midfield and pressed deep into the Tates Creek third before finding Miller.

"We were trying to press up fast because once their midfield got set, we weren't beating them," Dunbar Coach Todd Bretz said. "The ball was played to Amir, and they (Miller and Clemente) found each other. Ricky was able to find the opening for the shot and put it in."

Dunbar opened the scoring at the beginning of the second half when Miller fired a shot that was spilled by Tates Creek keeper Aamer Shalash and fell right to Connor Roberts, who pounded it into the back of the net.

Tates Creek answered after an illegal pass back was called on Dunbar, which set up an indirect free kick just outside the left edge of the six-yard box. Tates Creek's Nolan Adams fired a shot through the Dunbar wall that deflected off the keeper and into the goal.
